From Mystical Niggun to Matisyahu: Transformation and Trends in Hassidic Song
Led by Cantor Jessica Epstein
Lunch & Learn (Bring your own lunch, we will provide beverages)
Wednesdays, May 2 & 9, 11:30 AM
Most of us have heard niggunim (songs without words) and danced to klezmer music – but what is the source and meaning of these musical forms? Join Cantor Epstein as we take a musical journey through the Hassidic tradition of song. Through musical examples, and some singing ourselves, we will explore the source of the melodies and understand why each note has so much meaning. Come learn about the spiritual goals of Hassidic music and how it is deeply connected to the Kabbalistic understanding of the soul’s structure. We will also explore Hassidic dancing and modern iterations of Hassidic music, such as pop-star Matisyahu and singing sensation Lipa Schmeltzer.
